The Crime Analysis and Prevention Unit collects and analyzes information, monitors crime trends, and evaluates criminal behavior patterns. The Unit also partners with residents and businesses to undertake personal measures that will help eliminate or reduce crime and/or the risk of becoming a crime victim.
Since its creation in 2018, the Unit has maintained over 60 Neighborhood Watch groups, created first-of-its-kind in the region Business Watch and Hotel Watch programs, and created a Construction Watch program in partnership with the Construction Industry Crime Prevention Program. The Unit has conducted physical security risk assessments and Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) evaluations for Rancho Cordova and Sacramento County’s East Division. CPTED evaluations use various tools to evaluate environmental conditions in order to prevent crime. The Unit has also developed, implemented and maintained crime prevention security plans for businesses.
The Unit partners with the City of Rancho Cordova’s Planning Division to review new planning projects and planning redesigns. The Unit also reviews terms of conditional use permits for businesses planning to serve alcohol, as well as partners with Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC) to review ABC license requests to evaluate any environmental concerns, physical security concerns, and a property’s past history to determine whether a business is permitted to serve alcohol.
In addition, the Unit has implemented the Rancho Cordova Citizen’s Academy. The academy is taught by police executives and veteran officers and gives our community the opportunity to learn about policing in today’s society and in their own community.
