On June 3, 2018, at 4:05 a.m. the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department Communications Center received an incomplete 911 call from the 7300 block of Dave Street, within South Sacramento County.
Deputies arrived in the area and contacted a male who indicated he believed his wife and children were inside a nearby residence. After speaking with the male and being told of the circumstances, deputies approached the residence in question to make contact and investigate further. Upon their approach, they observed a male in the front yard with a firearm in his hand.
The two Deputies, fearing for their safety discharged their service weapons at the man, striking him once in the arm. The suspect, identified as a 38-year-old Sacramento man, was transported to an area hospital and is expected to survive.
The suspect’s firearm was recovered at the scene and found to be a semi-automatic handgun.
The investigation into this incident will be conducted by the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau and Professional Standards Division, which is standard practice for any officer-involved shooting that occurs in the Sheriff’s Department's jurisdiction. An independent review of the incident will be conducted by the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office and the Inspector General.
The deputies involved are both 4-year veterans of the Sheriff’s Department.
In accordance with the Sheriff’s Department policies and procedures, the deputies involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative leave pending the investigation.
