On April 24, 2018, at approximately 11:00 P.M. a 33-year-old male inmate died while in custody at the Sacramento County Main Jail. The man was taken into custody on February 26, 2018, when he was booked into the jail for charges relating to attempted murder.
At approximately 9:56 P.M. a deputy conducted an hourly visual cell check on the housing unit where the victim was housed by himself and found nothing unusual. At approximately 10:38 P.M. Sheriff’s Deputies and a nurse began providing inmates with their nightly medication within the same housing unit. At 10:44 P.M. Sheriff’s Deputies found the inmate in his cell and he was unresponsive. Sheriff’s Deputies immediately began life-saving measures but were unsuccessful in their attempts. The victim was pronounced deceased at approximately 11:00 P.M. by arriving personnel from the Sacramento City Fire Department.
At this point, there is no information leading investigators to suspect foul play.
The Sheriff’s Department will complete a thorough inmate death investigation in accordance with department procedures and state laws. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will determine the cause of death and forward its findings as prescribed by law. The Coroner’s Office will release the name of the deceased after notification has been made to his next of kin.
