On February 28, 2018, a 29-year-old inmate died after having a medical emergency at the Sacramento County Main Jail. The man was taken into custody on February 7, 2018, and booked into the Main Jail for possession of narcotic paraphernalia and a violation of his probation status. He was later transferred to the Rio Cosumnes Correctional Center.
In the early morning hours of February 28, 2018, the man was transferred to the Sacramento County Main Jail from the Rio Cosumnes Correctional Center for a court appearance, which was scheduled to take place on the same date.
At 6:57 a.m. a Sheriff’s Deputy was notified of a man possibly having a medical issue inside a transportation holding area. The Deputy immediately responded and found the man complaining of abdominal pain. Main Jail medical staff was summoned and the man was subsequently transported from the Main Jail to an area hospital via ambulance at 7:21 a.m. The man was later pronounced dead at the hospital at approximately 1:48 p.m.
The Sheriff’s Department will complete a thorough inmate death investigation in accordance with department procedures and state laws. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will determine the cause of death and forward its findings as prescribed by law. The Coroner’s Office will release the name of the deceased after notification has been made to his next of kin.
