In the early morning hours of October 9, 2017, Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department Detectives arrested two suspects related to the shooting death of a 39 year old Sacramento man. The suspects have been identified as Corey Crawley and Elijah Varnado. Both men are 22-years-old and from Sacramento. Crawley was arrested for murder charges. Varnado was arrested for being an accessory after the fact and a violation of his Post Release Community Supervision (PRCS) probation status. Both Crawley and Varnado remain in custody at the Sacramento County Main Jail and are ineligible for bail due to their charges.
At 0725 a.m. on October 8, 2017, the Sheriff’s Department Communication Center received a call from the 2200 block of Edison Avenue. The caller indicated there was a male lying in the front yard of a residence who appeared to be dead.
Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the area and located the victim. Upon locating the victim, deputies determined he had suffered from an apparent gunshot wound and did not have a pulse. Personnel from the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Department later arrived on-scene and pronounced the victim dead.
The Sheriff’s Department responded to the area several hours earlier at approximately 2:30 a.m. in regards to a report of gunshots being heard. At that time, deputies were unable to locate evidence of anyone being shot.
Homicide investigators are on-scene and attempting to determine what occurred. At this time, investigators have not yet established a motive or any suspect information. The victim has been identified as a male in his late 30’s.
The identity of the victim in this case will be made available by the Sacramento County Coroner’s office, after notification has been made to his next of kin.
