On July 6, 2017, a 43-year-old inmate died while in custody at the Sacramento County Main Jail. The man was taken into custody at the Main Jail on July 5, 2017 on domestic violence charges.
A little before 5:00 a.m. this morning, a floor deputy was advised the victim was in medical distress by his cellmate. When the deputy arrived at the cell, he observed the unresponsive victim in his cell. Medical staff inside the facility were notified, and along with custody staff, attempted to perform life-saving measures on the victim. Sacramento Metro Fire Department responded to the jail. Efforts to revive the victim were unsuccessful and the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene. There were no signs of trauma and foul play is not suspected.
The Sheriff’s Department will complete a thorough inmate death investigation in accordance with department procedures and state laws. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will determine the cause of death and forward its findings as prescribed by law. The Coroner’s Office will release the name of the deceased after notification has been made to his next of kin.
