A little before 6:00 p.m. on June 27, 2017, a Sheriff’s deputy voiced over the radio that a suspect was fighting with him on the lower platform of Regional Transit located at Watt Avenue and Interstate 80 in North Highlands. Shortly after the initial radio transmission, the officer updated that he had been shot.
Deputies responded to the scene along with other allied agencies. The Sheriff’s helicopter was overhead immediately, and observed the suspect run into the Red Roof Inn on Watt Avenue. A perimeter was immediately set up around the motel and contained. The injured deputy was transported by ambulance to a local hospital suffering from a gunshot wound to the face.
The Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Detail responded to the motel and began evacuations. Deputies began clearing the hotel methodically with the assistance of the robot. At approximately 9:15 p.m., the robot located the 27-year-old suspect hiding in an alcove located in an outside hallway of the motel. Deputies then took the suspect into custody without further incident.
The initial investigation shows the deputy made contact with the suspect on the lower platform of Regional Transit. Unprovoked, the suspect attacked the deputy and began fighting with him. At some point during the fight a gun was produced and the suspect fired two shots. One of the shots striking the deputy in the face.
The injured deputy is a 4 year veteran of the Sheriff’s Department and is currently assigned to Regional Transit. He is out of surgery and currently in stable condition with major structural facial injuries.
