A little after 8:45 p.m. on June 8, 2017, Sheriff’s Homicide detectives arrested Jimmy Young Vang, 34, of Sacramento for the attempted murder on a Sheriff’s deputy which occurred earlier that morning.
A little before 3:00 a.m. on June 8, 2017, a Sheriff’s deputy conducted a vehicle stop on a white Lincoln for a vehicle code violation in the area of Stockton Boulevard and Fruitridge Road in South Sacramento.
The vehicle stopped on Stockton Boulevard just south of Fruitridge Road. Vang exited the passenger side of the vehicle with a handgun, and immediately fired several shots at the deputy which struck the deputy’s patrol car. The deputy returned fire at the Vang. Vang got back into the vehicle which fled southbound on Stockton Boulevard a short distance and stopped again. Vang exited the car and fled on foot into the neighborhood near Stockton Boulevard and Jansen Drive. Deputies were unable to locate Vang during an extensive search of the area which lasted several hours.
The driver of the vehicle sped away as deputies pursued. The pursuit continued onto northbound Highway 99 at speeds over 100 miles per hour. The pursuit continued onto northbound Interstate 5. The California Highway Patrol and Yolo County Sheriff assisted as the pursuit neared Yolo County. A spike strip was deployed and disabled the suspect vehicle near Zamora. The driver of the vehicle fled on foot into the nearby fields and orchards and was later located during an extensive search of the area and identified.
Homicide detectives were able to identify Jimmy Vang as the suspect through their investigation. A little after 8:45 p.m., Detectives of the Sheriff’s Major Crimes Bureau, Gang Unit, and Special Enforcement Detail located Vang leaving the area of 33rd Street and 7th Avenue in South Sacramento in a vehicle. They attempted a vehicle stop on Vang and a high speed pursuit ensued. Vang lost control of his vehicle at eastbound Highway 80 and Arden Way. He exited the car and fled on foot. He attempted to take the car of a nearby motorist, but with the assistance of the Sacramento Police Department helicopter and several deputies close by, Vang was quickly taken into custody.
Vang was arrested for attempted murder, attempted carjacking, and an outstanding felony warrant for violation of his Post Release Community Supervision (AB109). He was booked at the Sacramento County Main Jail, and is currently ineligible for bail. He is scheduled to be arraigned in Sacramento Superior Court on June 12, 2017.
